The band weaved in and out of the ‘Dark Star Jam’ throughout the second set, with new keyboardist Vince Welnick and part-time keyboardist Bruce Hornsby adding a jazzier feeling to the night’s proceedings. This performance, at Giants Stadium on June 17, is legendary for being the first ‘Dark Star Jam’ since 1974. The final concert occurred during the band’s summer 1991 tour, their first without Mydland. The return to RFK was triumphant, with a healthier Garcia and a re-energised band running through lesser-played material like Brent Mydland’s ‘Far From Me’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues’. RFK was the sight of one of the more infamous Dead shows three years prior, a time when sweltering heat and dehydration contributed to Jerry Garcia falling into a diabetic coma days later. The second show is from the same tour, this one taking place ten days later at RFK Stadium in Washington DC.
